1:16 Elijah ¹  said to the king, ²  “This is what the Lord says, ‘You sent messengers to seek an oracle from Baal Zebub, the god of Ekron. You must think there is no God in Israel from whom you can seek an oracle! ³  Therefore you will not leave the bed you lie on, for you will certainly die.’” ⁴

23:3 The king stood by the pillar and renewed ⁵  the covenant before the Lord, agreeing to follow ⁶  the Lord and to obey his commandments, laws, and rules with all his heart and being, ⁷  by carrying out the terms ⁸  of this covenant recorded on this scroll. All the people agreed to keep the covenant. ⁹

20:9 Isaiah replied, “This is your sign from the Lord confirming that the Lord will do what he has said. Do you want the shadow to move ahead ten steps or to go back ten steps?” ¹¹

17:23 Finally ¹²  the Lord rejected Israel ¹³  just as he had warned he would do ¹⁴  through all his servants the prophets. Israel was deported from its land to Assyria and remains there to this very day.

17:35 The Lord made an agreement ¹⁵  with them ¹⁶  and instructed them, “You must not worship other gods. Do not bow down to them, serve them, or offer sacrifices to them.

17:13 The Lord solemnly warned Israel and Judah through all his prophets and all the seers, “Turn back from your evil ways; obey my commandments and rules that are recorded in the law. I ordered your ancestors to keep this law and sent my servants the prophets to remind you of its demands.” ¹⁷

[1:16]  ⁴ sn For the third time in this chapter we read the Lord’s sarcastic question to king and the accompanying announcement of judgment. The repetition emphasizes one of the chapter’s main themes. Israel’s leaders should seek guidance from their own God, not a pagan deity, for Israel’s sovereign God is the one who controls life and death.
